An Injury Led One COTC Alumnus to a Fulfilling Career
Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) alumnus Tim Blunn’s journey to his career as a computed tomography (CT) technologist began with an accident. Blunn was still living in England when he suffered a soccer injury that significantly dislocated his knee. The x-rays proved to be “shockingly interesting,” and he was hooked on radiology. Soon after he immigrated to the United States, specifically Columbus, Ohio, Blunn was working in a hospital when a coworker suggested he look into COTC’s radiologic technology program. As Blunn would say, the rest was history.

Associate of Applied Science
The Associate of Applied Science in Engineering Technology offers a quick on-ramp to an in-demand career, excellent salary and advancement opportunities. Students learn real-world, transferable skills in multiple industry sectors and complete their education with a cooperative experience with a local industry. Graduates are well positioned for roles as engineering technicians who design, implement and support a wide range of engineering processes. They may also choose to continue their academic progression for a bachelor’s degree or higher.
Frequently Asked Questions
I applied to COTC. Is that the same as applying to the ADN program?
No. The ADN program is a competitive, selective healthcare program. Students first apply to COTC (the college) and indicate interest in a health technologies program (or apply to a pre-health track). Then students complete a separate application to apply to the ADN program.
How do I learn about the application process for the ADN program?
Students interested in the ADN program may either register and attend an information meeting or complete an online nursing information course.
What are the requirements to apply to the ADN program?
Prerequisite classes must be completed
There are classes students must take, have taken or can be awarded transfer credit for — before they can apply to the ADN program:
- A full unit of high school biology or Introduction to Biology
- A full unit of high school chemistry or Introduction to Chemistry Principles
- or higher college equivalents
- or approved COTC transfer credit for Anatomy & Physiology I
Students who have taken the courses or receive transfer credit for the courses must have gotten a grade C or higher.
Health Selection Exam

CNA
Students must provide verification (card or registry number) of current status as an Ohio certified nursing assistant (formerly) state tested nurse aide STNA). The COTC course that provides eligibility for CNA testing is NURS 002 Basic Health Care Skills.
Transcripts
Students must submit official high school transcript with graduation date or official GED transcript. High school seniors must send a current transcript during their senior year and a final transcript after graduation. Additionally, official transcripts from all career centers, colleges, and universities attended past and current with GPA must be sent. ALL foreign transcripts (high school and colleges) must be evaluated by a NACES Member- www.naces.org.
When are applications for the ADN program available/due?
Applications are typically available one month prior to the deadline. Request the application from your assigned advisor or email cotcadvising@mail.cotc.edu.
Application due dates or deadlines are:
- Feb. 15 (Summer semester start — mid-late May)
- June 1 (Autumn semester start — late August)
- Oct. 1 (Spring semester start — early January)
Are there additional requirements if I’m accepted into the ADN program?
CPR
Students must have a CPR—American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Certificate for clinical sites upon being selected into the program.
Can I take classes online or face-to-face?
Students will be required to take classes on campus for the ADN program. Some general education courses may be available online, but students should plan to be on campus to use equipment and engage in hands-on learning.
Are there any student organizations for nursing students?
Alpha Delta Nu recognizes the academic excellence of students in the study of associate degree of nursing. The society encourages the pursuit of advanced degrees in the profession of nursing as well as a lifelong professional responsibility. Additionally, the society shall participate in the recruitment of qualified individuals into the profession of nursing. Full membership is granted in the final semester of study if the student maintains a cumulative 3.0 GPA and earns a grade of B or better in all courses. Students shall have demonstrated conduct that reflects integrity and professionalism. Faculty advisors: Kris Bowman and Jeri Whiteus.

College Credit Plus provides students in grades 7-12 the opportunity to earn college and high school credits at the same time by taking college courses. What is the difference between being an Architectural Engineer and being an Architect?
Architectural Engineers focus on a building’s structural design to ensure it meets building codes and is sturdy and functional. Architects focus on designing a building’s look and style.
How quickly can I complete the Architectural Engineering Technology program?
Students can complete the Architectural Computer Aided Drawing (CAD) Certificate in just two semesters.
After completion of the Architectural CAD Certificate, students are well on their way to completing the Architectural Engineering associate degree.
The amount of time it takes a student to complete the Architectural Engineering Technology associate degree depends upon how many courses are taken per semester.
Students who attend full-time (and take 3-5 classes on average per semester) will complete quicker than students who attend part-time (and take 1-2 classes on average per semester).

The courses students need to take to complete a certificate or degree are listed in a Plan of Study. The Architectural Engineering Technology Program has two Plans of Study.

Can I take classes online or face-to-face?
Students at COTC have the flexibility to take classes face-to-face or online. The Architectural Engineering Technology program has courses that must be completed face-to-face for students to learn through hand’s-on experience and using equipment and technology in the Engineering program.
Are there any student organizations on campus related to Engineering?
Current students in any Engineering program can join The Society of Engineering Technology (SET), a student organization for both COTC and Ohio State-Newark students. Students who are part of the SET can gain awareness of education and career opportunities available to their preferred engineering technology field.
