Hsun-Yu (Sharon) Chuang, assistant professor of
speech and communication, presented at the Ohio Communication
Association annual conference on Oct. 4, 2024, at Cleveland State
University. Her presentation, based on autoethnographic research
was titled, “A Breath that Saves Two Lives: An Immigrant Woman’s
Vulnerable Transition to Motherhood.”

Appointments
Lauren Massie was appointed dean of technical
studies in August 2023. She joins the COTC team after a long
leadership term at C-TEC of Licking County and various posts
at the Ohio Department of Higher Education.
James T. Jarc, EdD, was appointed dean of arts
and sciences in August 2023. Jarc has served the college most
recently as associate dean for online campus and teaching &
learning, and as a full-time faculty member in the digital media
design program prior to that.

Maey Gharbiah, associate professor
of biological and physical sciences, completed the ACUE
Certificate in Effective College Instruction.
Ben Hampshire, assistant director of student

Ashley Hughes, admissions technology
coordinator, was selected and participated in a Women’s
Leadership Summit hosted by Ohio University.
Seth Kim, economics faculty, recently completed
a logistics and supply chain micro-credential from Denison Edge.
Seth is also pursuing his PhD in Leadership Studies with a
concentration in Business from the University of the Cumberlands.
Presentations
Emily Chovanec, associate professor of nursing,

presented at the Ohio Association of Two Year Colleges conference
on Oct. 20 in Lorain, Ohio. Their session, titled “Changing the
culture starting at ground ‘0′” explored the work COTC has done
to improve professional development at the college.

Steven Huizenga, PhD, professor of philosophy,
and James Jarc, EdD, associate dean for online
campus and teaching and learning, presented at the Online
Learning Consortium “Innovate” Conference in Nashville. Their
presentation, “Quality Assurance In Online Education” highlighted
the work that the eLearning Champions Committee has done toward
fostering excellence in COTC’s online campus.
Melanie Garrabrant was invited to present as
part of an Education
First Student Success webinar series on Jan. 30, 2023.
Her presentation titled, “Enter the Path: Intake Processes that
help students choose and enter their pathway,” focused on dual
enrollment, College Credit Plus (CCP) pathway work COTC has done
to help provide students early exposure to transfer and career
pathways.

Nursing Programs Administrator, has been selected as a member of
Cohort 2 (March-June 2022) of the Organization for Associate
Degree Nursing (OADN) Leadership Institute. The OADN Leadership
Institute is the ONLY national program exclusively focused on ADN
nursing faculty and deans/directors seeking opportunities to
enhance their leadership competencies and skills.
Lori Peden, MSN, professor of nursing, was
inducted into the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing
(OADN) Academy for Associate Degree Nursing. The Academy of
Associate Degree Nursing was established to
recognize remarkable contributions as role models for
student, faculty colleagues, and as advocates for associate

Megan Hughett, MSW, LISW-S, received her certificate of
completion in EMDR Therapy Training as required by the EMDR
National Association. EMDR is a treatment method used to help

Ohio’s Military Strategic Implementation Team (MSIT). MSIT was
created to provide guidance and oversight on the implementation

Walker’s designation as a fellow of the AADN, recognizing her
outstanding contributions to associate degree nursing education,
will be officially bestowed during the annual OADN 2020 Virtual
Town Hall meeting.
Walker, EJD, MS, RN, Sandra Y., COTC dean of technical
studies, was presented the 2020 Bobbie Anderson Leadership Award
by the Foundation of the Organization for Associate Degree
Nursing (OADN) in a virtual award ceremony. The award
is given annually to an educator or nursing program
administrator who has demonstrated exceptional leadership within
his or her institution and community, at the state and national
levels. (November 2020).
Weirick, EdD, Chad W. COTC dean of general education
and transfer programs, was presented the Dissertation of the Year
award from The University of West Florida. His dissertation topic
was Assessing Multiple Placement Methods for College Mathematics
at a Two-Year College. Weirick completed his Doctorate of
Education in Curriculum and Assessment in May 2019. The award was
presented via a virtual ceremony on August 21, 2020.
