Application and Hiring Process
This provides step-by-step instructions for a student to secure a student employment position and for a supervisor to complete the hiring process. The instructions also contain links to forms needed to complete the process from start to finish.
These steps apply to the positions in area 1 current job openings. The hiring process for positions in area 2 are unique for each position. Please refer to individual postings for more information.

Student
Step 1: Apply for a Position
- Review current job openings at Student Employment Opportunities.
- Complete the application and submit the electronic form.
- The application will be forwarded to the supervisor(s) for consideration.
TIP: It never hurts to check in with individual supervisors to show interest in their posted position. It gives the supervisor an opportunity to meet the applicant, and put a face with a name.
Step 2: Secure a Position
- Promptly respond to any contact from supervisor.
- Follow-up with supervisor(s) concerning application if needed.
- Interview, ask questions and be clear about supervisor’s expectations.
- Accept or decline job offer, whichever is applicable.
- Repeat step one, if needed.
Step 3: Complete “On Boarding” Process
- You will receive the new hire packet via the student employment coordinator.
- Follow ALL of the instructions in the packet.
- Follow “welcome” instructions sent to your school email.
- Discuss start date with supervisor.
- Refer to the Employee Handbook for program specifics.
Supervisor
Step 1: Create a Position
- Request a template from coordinator.
- Complete template, send to coordinator for a job# and pay rate.
- Request description to be posted (if needed).
Step 2: Select a Student
- Review applications as they are received via interoffice mail.
- Conduct interviews.
- Contact all applicants regarding their application status.
- Request job posting to be removed from website (if applicable).
Step 3: Initiate Onboarding Process
- Complete the COTC Intent to Hire form. This will:
- Generate New Hire Packet.
- Start the background check and work permit processes (if applicable).
- Cause student’s current eligibility status to be verified.
- Generate a Payroll Authorization (if a background check and/or work permit are not required).
- Create your file for new hire paperwork/information.
Step 4: Complete Onboarding Process
- Complete supervisor section of Payroll Authorization.
- Re-enforce/support the student in completing their onboarding steps.
- When the on boarding process is complete the student will receive a “welcome” email (supervisor will be cc’d) with instructions for dIrect deposit, W-4: Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate, how to access e-timecard, etc. (step 3 – student).
