Alumni Awards

Overview

COTC recognizes impressive alumni who have used their COTC education as a stepping stone to professional achievement and community service through the presentation of three alumni awards each year. These alumni awards are presented during the annual Alumni Holiday Reception at the Newark campus in early December.

Outstanding Alumni Award

The purpose of this award is to recognize COTC Alumni who have personal and/or professional achievement that brings honor and distinction to the college and individual attainment and/or contributions for the betterment of our community.

Criteria to consider

  • Is the nominee more than “good at their job”?
  • Does the nominee give back to the community?
  • Is the nominee involved with the college?
  • Does the nominee help to advance the college?

Transitions Alumni Award

The purpose of this award is to recognize COTC alumni currently working at the college in either a faculty or staff capacity who help advance the college and make a difference in the lives of current students.

Criteria to consider

  • Is the nominee more than “good at their job”?
  • Does the nominee help to advance the college?
  • Does the nominee make a difference in the lives of our current students?

John C. “Jay” Barker Community Service Alumni Award

The purpose of this award is to recognize COTC alumni who have made a significant impact on their local community through their leadership, involvement, and service. This award was created in memory of John C. “Jay” Barker (Business Management Technology, 1986), whose incredible dedication to the college and the community epitomize the qualities and characteristics this award seeks to recognize.

Criteria to consider

  • Does the nominee use their talents to serve their community?
  • Does the nominee personally undertake at least one of the following?
    • Serve on a community board or lead a community project?
    • Inspire others to volunteer their time and talents?
    • Does the nominee advance the college through their service?

Outstanding Alumni Award Recipients

Transitions Alumni Award Recipients

Established in 2009, the Transitions Alumni Award recognizes COTC alumni faculty and staff who have made the transition from student to partner in career development, making a difference in the lives of current or future students. It is presented at the annual COTC Alumni Holiday Reception held in December.

Barker Alumni Community Service Award Recipients

​​​​The John C. “Jay” Barker Alumni Community Service Award was created in 2013 by the COTC Alumni Council and is presented annually at the July 3rd Independence Day concert and fireworks to recognize COTC alumni who have made a significant impact by their service to the betterment of our community.​ ​The inaugural award was presented posthumously in July 2014 to John C. “Jay” Barker and named in his honor.

Elizabeth Barnhart Award

The Elizabeth Barnhart Award for Nursing Excellence is presented to a graduating associate degree nursing student from the Newark campus who exemplifies the highest ideals of the nursing profession: intelligence, commitment, sacrifice, integrity and a compassionate connection to others.

Officer Thomas W. Cottrell Jr. Award

The Officer Thomas W. Cottrell, Jr. Award for Character and Dedication to Public Service is given out at each Peace Officer Basic Training graduation ceremony during the academic year. The selection of the recipients is based on many factors including, but not limited to, academic success and overall leadership and character.

The $1,000 award assists the recipient with equipment purchases and other expenses associated with beginning a career in law enforcement.
