Overview

The Medical Coding Short-Term Certificate is just six classes and can be completed in one calendar year (three semesters).

The Medical Coding One-Year Certificate can be completed in one calendar year (three semesters) and continue your education to expand your job opportunities.

After completion of one or both medical coding certificates, students can sit for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam through the American Academy of Professional Coders. You will also be prepared to continue your education with COTC’s Associate of Applied Science in Health Services Technology.

Both of the medical coding certificates prepare students for a variety of employment opportunities:

  • certified medical biller and coder
  • health information technician
  • medical records technician
  • medical secretary
  • medical office administrator
  • quality improvement analyst
  • insurance claims analyst

The more training and education a student completes, the more career advancement opportunities there are in medical coding.

Continue Your Education

Credits earned in the medical coding certificates count toward COTC’s Associate of Applied Science in Health Services Technology with a major in medical coding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Students can complete the short-term certificate or the one-year certificate in one calendar year.

You will be required to take classes on campus to use equipment and engage in hands-on learning. Some general education courses may be available online.

COTC awards more than $1 million in scholarships to students each year.

Every student is encouraged to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for grants, scholarships and loans. Students who complete the FAFSA are automatically considered for some scholarships. Other scholarships require an application.
