Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) will hold information sessions for anyone interested in becoming a peace officer in Ohio.

COTC’s peace officer basic training (POBT) is consistently in the top two open enrollment academies for average score on the state certificate exam. The next POBT academy begins in May and runs through October at COTC’s Newark campus. Classes are typically held Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with occasional weekend classwork.

COTC’s peace officer basic training exceeds the requirements of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission and positions students to excel on the state certification exam. Since 2014 all COTC peace officer basic training graduates have passed the state certification exam — that’s a six-year 100% pass rate. Graduates also earn credits toward an associate degree in law enforcement technology.

Students with demonstrated financial need, as well as students who are currently in or exiting foster care, who enroll in the peace officer basic training certificate program may be eligible for a short-term certificate grant. Each student may receive a one-time grant of up to $2,000 to assist with tuition and fees (does not include the cost of books and supplies).
